Characterisation Method Information
Characterisation Method Name:
Arsenic air emissions impact on severe morbidity
Date Completed:
Principal Method Name:
EPS: cancer pathway
Method Description:
Model for cancer pathway

The characterisation factor is determined by the empirical method.

Category indicator value in system considered

The portion of cancer incidences not causing death (38%) is classified as severe
morbidity. The average length of the morbidity is not known at present, but is assumed to be 5 years. This means that the total indicator value in the environmental system is (5/24)*(0.38/0.62)*39 = 4.98 person-years of severe morbidity, where 39 is the indicator value determined in "Arsenic air emissions impact on YOLL".

Contribution to category indicators value from a flow unit

The same contribution as in "Arsenic air emissions on YOLL" is valid, i.e. 1/40000 per kg arsenic.

Calculation of characterisation factor

This would mean that the characterisation factor would be 4.98/40000 = 1.24E-04 person-years/kg arsenic.

Methodological Range:
The residence time in air for particles is in the order of days to weeks, depending on particle size, precipitation, and concentration of other particles and condensable gases. In terms of contribution to population exposure urban populations are receiving the highest doses and mainly from their local sources. The background levels are low compared to urban levels, which means that the trans-boundary pollution may be neglected. Considering an incubation time of the order of 20 years, and that most of the data available are from 1985 the system is defined as Sweden at the state of 1985 during 20 years.
