The characterisation factor is determined by an equivalency method using PM10 as a reference.

Equivalency factor

The same equivalency factor is used as in "HCI impact on severe morbidity", i.e. 1.84 kg ‘effective’ PM10/kg HCl.
Calculation of characterisation factor According to "PM10 impact on morbidity" there is 3.61E-06 person-years morbidity/ kg PM10. We thus obtain:

3.61E-06 *1.84 = 6.64E-06 person-years of morbidity per kg of HCl.
